The history

Until XV and XVI centuries, coffee was unknown. During those centuries extensive plantations were harvested in the Arab region of Yemen.

The consumption of this drink increased a lot in Europe in the XVII Century. The Dutch were urged to cultivate it, and they were given the task of exploiting big plantations in Java and Sumatra, followed by the French to whom are awarded the title of having taken the coffee for the first time to Latin America. Since 1714 the French were able to bring a plant of coffee in good state to the island of Martinique, expanding through the new Continent

 

 

Knowing the drink

The plant of where it leaves the product belongs to the family of the Rubiáceas. Thirty species of coffee are produced, but only three are important: The Arabic one, canephora and Iberian.

The fruit is roasted and then is milled. The plant is developed in the course of six or seven months, being able to change color; first it is green, clear later red and when it is ripen and ready to cut it is of crimsom color

 

 

Production

The world production of coffee is located around the 5 mts. with important plantations, in those are the results of the crop of Brazil, first producer and world exporter weigh (33% of the world trade). The Brazilian production has felt effected extraordinarily by the climatic conditions, in result its crops oscillate thoroughly from some temperatures to others.

It is followed in importance by Colombia (0.8mt.), Indonesia (0.3mt.) and Mexico (0.25mt.). It is a basic product of export for the Central American countries: El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua (1.5–0.8 mt); it constitutes a non despicable chapter of the economy of Peru and Ecuador (0.9mt). among African countries producers Ethiopia and Uganda highlight (around 2 mt). The main importers are: E.U.A, R.F.A, France, Italy, Japan, Low importers and Spain.

The coffee of the Dominican Republic, of “juncalito” type is considered to be the best in the world and its come from the mountains of San José de las Matas and Jarabacoa
